Stars’ Ribeiro slashes Chris Osgood across the chest after Red Wings victory in game 2

After a fairly boring 3rd period, things got pretty interesting after the buzzer sounded to end game 2 of the Western Conference finals.

Chris Osgood used the butt-end of his stick to poke Dallas’ Mike Ribeiro as he skated through the crease at the end of the game. Ribeiro then turned around and, from behind the net, with 2 hands on his stick, slashed Osgood across the chest.

Here’s a video from TSN.

It’s clear that Osgood gets Ribeiro with the butt end of his stick as Ribeiro skates past the crease. But even if he got poked in the face, I think Ribeiro completely overreacted. You just don’t 2-hand chop someone across the chest. Especially not the goalie.

If I had to guess, I would say he’s going to be suspended for at least a game. The TSN commentators don’t think the NHL will suspend Ribeiro, but considering the recent emphasis the NHL has placed on end-of-game fisticuffs, my money is on a suspension.

About the author:  Marc is a Long Island native and a hockey goalie. He has been a Rangers fan for as long as he can remember, although, in the interest of full disclosure, there was a time during the 1993 playoffs when he vaguely remembers cheering for Pierre Turgeon and the Islanders after the Dale Hunter cheap shot. His favorite Ranger of all time is Mike Richter.

  1. i beg to defer. The slash wasnt even that hard, it was more of a placement on his chest of dont do it again, but osgood faked it into a slash.

  2. I have to disagree with you. Don’t forget you’re watching it in slo-mo. To me it looked like Ribeiro hit Osgood pretty hard and I seriously doubt Osgood was faking it. I’m a goalie and I’ve been hit hard in the chest a few times. Sometimes it takes a second before you realize the wind is knocked out of you. That’s what it looked like to me.

  3. I don’t buy what you are saying Marc. Yes, Riberio overreacted, but you mean to tell me that his chest protector can stand up to a 100 mph shot but can’t take a slash like that. Yes, you can still feel it, and yes it might hurt a little, but nothing to warrant that kind of reaction from Ossie(I am a goalie also) .

  4. yeah marc, im a goalie too, and ive been speared in the chest, which hurts a lot more. I also have had a clocked 98 mph shot at me right on my sternum… im pretty sure that hurts more, but i didnt have no med trainer have to come to me so i could make a scene. its just how every goalie plays the game in the NHL, they try and draw penalties, they all acted it into worse. And you say “it tkaes a few seconds before you realize it”, but osy was already cringing before the stick hit him.
